Hey everyone, here are some basic tips (I will be posting more over time) for anyone who's coming over for Drop Dead this year:
PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION:
Here's an important tip on this subject, you should really get a "7 Colinas" (Sete Colinas) card, it's rechargeable and the card itself only costs 0.50€, it allows you to charge it with cheaper fares (than getting a regular paper ticket), that are available for both metro and bus (Carris). You can charge it with a one hour fare for the urban area (means you can ride the metro and the bus as many times as you want, in the urban area, during the 60 minutes period after you charged it), a two hour fare for all of Lisbon's area (good for people who are staying far from the centre or are coming/going to the airport, it lasts 90 minutes), or a single day ticket (you can ride the bus or take the metro as many times as you like, during the 24hs period after you have charged the card with this fare).
The prices are:
Single Urban fare 1,25€
Single fare for the network 1,65€
One-Day network fare 3,70€
Then you have some special buses (expresses), like the "Airbus" and the "Airshuttle", which come/go faster from/to the airport, the ticket's prices are mentioned down below, in the "getting to Lisbon's centre" topic.
For more public transportations' info, you can check out the internet:
Lisbon's main bus company website: http://www.carris.pt/en/index.php
...And the trains' one: http://www.cp.pt/cp/displayPage.do?vgnextoid=87cbd5abe2a74010VgnVCM1000007b01a8c0RCRD&lang=en
Also, the subway's one: http://www.metrolisboa.pt/Default.aspx?alias=www.metrolisboa.pt/eng
On these website you can check out schedules, prices, stops, etc. If you need help figuring out if some stop is near or far the location you desire, you can always check out http://www.maporama.com, it's really easy!
When taking public transportations, be sure to keep a hand on your wallet and cellphone (in particular), there are a lot of pickpockets (specially when they see you are a foreigner).
About the subway, the recommended hotels are near the "Anjos" subway station, so to get to Tuatara (the venue for the weekend) it's really easy, because it's located in the same subway line (green line), and it's only 5 subways stations away (it's in "Alvalade", the 5th subway station after "Anjos"). You can check out the subway's line-map on their website, given above, amongst the other public transportation links.
The cost of one ticket is 0.75€ I think, and a two way ticket is like 1.45€.
HOTELS' AREA:
For the people who are going to stay in the recommended hotels, I strongly advise everyone not to walk in that area alone at night, it's a prostitution and drug dealing zone, so if you don't want any trouble and value your money (and other personal belongings), please, be with several other people when walking in this neighbourhood at night, or be prepared to get robbed.
On the other hand, if you are looking for prostitutes and drugs, this might be the best place for you to hang out (beware of rip-offs, specially when it comes to drugs - don't say I didn't warn ya!).
RESTAURANTS:
There are some expensive typical seafood restaurants in the recommended hotels' area, but there are also some nice ones as well, with typical seafood (and others), which are really affordable, so you just have to look carefully within that avenue (Avenida Almirante Reis), when searching for a place to eat (menus with prices are usually posted by the entrance). Also, I don't recommend that you look for restaurants in Alvalade - where "Tuatara" (the venue for the weekend) is located - 'cause most places there are more expensive than in the middle of Lisbon (specially the old parts of Lisbon, filled with great and cheap restaurants).
TAXIS:
When it comes to Taxis, be sure to ask for the receipt ALWAYS (there is a post by DJ Yggdrasil, where he shows an image of what a taxi receipt looks like, in Portugal), this is very important for you not to get ripped off (which happens A LOT to foreigners).
GETTING TO LISBON'S CENTRE (from the airport):
Okay, so you have about 3 options here, you either choose a taxi (it's about 15 euro, I think, depends to which part of Lisbon you are going to), or the bus - there are two kinds, the normal one, and the Express. Each ticket (for the normal one) is 1.40€, but you can get a rechargeable card (read the "public transportations" part, on this post, for more info) that is way better, the Express bus is a bit more expensive but it's way faster.
There are two Expresses you can take, from the airport (depending on where you want to go), the 91 bus, called "Airbus" (which goes to Cais do Sodré), and the "Aeroshuttle" (which goes to Estação do Oriente/Parque das Nações, and Sete Rios). The Aeroshuttle runs from 7 AM to 11 PM, and each ticket (one way) costs 3€. The Airbus costs the same and runs from 7.45 AM to 10.30 PM.
Then you have the regular bus, I can only remember nr 44 (which passes by the airport and goes to Cais do Sodré), it runs from 5.45 AM. to 9.30 PM, and during the night you have nr 208 (goes from Estação do Oriente, passes by the airport and goes to Cais do Sodré). It runs from 12.30 AM to 5:35 AM.
So this is all I can remember for now, I'll be updating this with more stuff, feel free to pose questions or share your own tips!
[EDIT]
One more thing! Some of you will be visiting Sintra (beautiful place, everyone should check it out BTW), and the best way to get there is by train of course, however, you should avoid taking the train during nigh time. Sintra's train line during the night, even if you are accompanied by a bunch of people, can get dangerous after the sun sets, trust me. But it's okay during day time, just mind your own business and keep an eye on your wallet/cellphone, and it will be a smooth trip. |

Some More Tips
I walked around the hotel a bit, it looked ok at night not that bad especially if your in a group
It get chilly at night bring a sweater or a jacket
Bring a pillow for the hotel, because their pillows are not the best and shampoo becouse they only give soap
In Portuguese restaurants the will put out a plate of cheese and pâtés and stuff. This is not free and you will be charged at the end of the meal.
In Traditional Portuguese restaurants most meals are 3.50 to 8.50 euros. One dish is really big and plenty for at least 2 people.
Note on tipping for Americans. In Portugal tipping is a really nice extra but no one expects it and it looks like most people don’t bother with that |

More tips
Dont drink Lisbon Water, the pipes are not the best and you might get sick. Water outside Lisbon is OK
there is a cheap minimart right outside the hotel-hostel so just get some water there
also try the best soda ever SUMOL, I like original flavor the best although strobery is great for mixing with vodca . They are all really good but a bit too sweet for me except for the original.
